Most patio calls start the same way. The slab out back is too small for a table and chairs. Or it cracked years ago, and now it holds water after a rain. We measure the yard with you and mark out a size that fits your furniture.
An extension works when the old patio is still sound. We form the new section against it and tie the two together at the joint. The finish gets matched as close as concrete allows. Color and texture never line up perfectly across slabs poured years apart, and we say so up front.
Replacement is the answer when the slab is broken, heaved or sinking. We break out the old concrete, rebuild the base under it, and pour fresh. A patio that sank usually had a soft base, so the dirt work matters as much as the mix. If the slab is solid but stained or dull, a decorative concrete overlay can cover it instead.
We start with layout. The patio gets marked on the ground so you can stand in it before anything is poured. Then we cut the grade, pull out the loose dirt, and compact a base that will not settle.
Forms go in next, set to the slope. A patio has to fall away from the house so rain does not sit against the foundation. We tie in rebar or mesh, then pour, screed and float the surface. Control joints are cut into the slab so any cracking follows the lines we choose.
Modesto summers run hot and dry, with plenty of days over 100 degrees. Concrete sets fast in that heat. Summer pours start early, and the surface is kept damp or covered while it cures. In winter we watch the rain and the cold nights, and a pour waits for a dry window.
A broom finish is the standard. It is a light texture pulled across the fresh surface, and it gives grip when the patio is wet. Color can be mixed through the concrete, and a pattern can be stamped in before it sets. In the Valley sun, a dark slab holds more heat underfoot than a light one.
Steps and landings are poured with the patio, so the levels line up. Thickened edges go in where the slab needs the extra support. If the yard also needs a walkway from the side gate, we form it on the same trip. A pad for a shed or a hot tub is a separate concrete slab, poured on the same visit.
Size moves a patio price more than anything else. After that come the dirt work, the finish you pick, and how close the truck can get. A backyard the mixer cannot reach means the concrete is wheeled or pumped in. We put the estimate in writing after we look at the yard, at no charge.
