Stamped concrete is a normal pour with pattern and color worked into the top while it is still soft. The finished slab can read like slate, flagstone, cobblestone or wood plank. It is still one solid piece of concrete, formed and finished by our own crew. Stamped and colored work is the decorative side of our concrete work in Modesto.
A stamped patio is built the same way any concrete patio is: base prep, forms, rebar and a clean pour. The pattern goes on after the surface is floated, while the concrete is still workable. Color can go in the mix, on the surface, or both. Every stamped job we do is a fresh pour.

Most stamped jobs start in the backyard. We pour new patios, extend patios that came out too small, and replace slabs that are past repair. Patterns run wall to wall, or we band the edge in a second pattern and color to frame the slab.
Covered patios are common here, and stamped concrete works well under them. The slab keeps a slope away from the house so water runs off. Steps and stoops get stamped and colored to match, with the edge texture carried over the riser.
A stamped concrete walkway ties the front door to the driveway, or runs down a side yard. If you would rather keep the walk plain, that is a standard concrete walkway and we pour those too. A patio can also wrap around a pool as part of the same slab.
A stamped concrete driveway is held to the same standards as a plain one. It gets a compacted base, rebar or mesh, and the thickness the vehicles call for. Control joints still go in, and we lay them out to follow the pattern lines where we can.
Some people want the color without the pattern. Colored concrete is the same pour with pigment mixed into the load, finished with a broom or a light texture. A broom finish driveway with a stamped border sits in the middle.
Color usually comes from two places. Integral color goes in the mix, so the pigment runs all the way through the slab. An antiquing color goes on at stamping time and settles into the low spots, which gives the pattern depth.
Summer here runs hot and dry, with many days over 100 degrees. Hot concrete sets fast, and a stamp only works while the slab is still open. We start summer pours early, keep the surface from drying too fast, and cure the slab afterward.
In winter, cold nights and rain push pours back, and tule fog keeps a slab damp. A dry, settled window matters more for stamped work than it does for a plain slab. We watch the forecast and set the date around it.
Sealer keeps a stamped slab looking the way it did on day one. We seal after the slab has cured, and the coat wears down over time in Valley sun and traffic. Plan on a fresh coat every few years. A grit additive in the sealer helps with footing on patios and around steps.
